13 Bekky May

My work is motivated by, and symbolic of, powerful natural forces pertaining to the four elements – earth, water, air and fire.

The pebbles have largely been created naturally, from digging the clay myself, through to firing the finished works using local wood in a homemade kiln. The smoke from the fire ‘paints’ the surface of the pebbles and makes each piece entirely individual.

The accompanying film and photographs illustrate the low tech and sustainable working processes that I have been exploring in my studio which, both literally and figuratively, is outdoors.

Mine is a solitary journey in which I work with the clay, thereby allowing it to speak for itself and for me.
